How Active Communities works with...

Young people

We offer a variety of active opportunities and confidence-building programmes for young people in East Riding of Yorkshire, particularly in areas affected by anti-social behavior.

How do we work with young people?

Our Positive Lifestyles programme leads our initiatives, focusing on activities outside of school hours. We collaborate with various youth action groups across the East Riding to support and develop activities that offer a safe space for young people to express themselves, have fun, and engage in physical activity. Our objectives are to:

  • Engage and support young people at risk of anti-social behaviour
  • Reduce inactivity levels among young people
  • Enhance the physical, mental, and social activity of young people
  • Improve emotional well-being through positive activities

We adhere to six key principles of effective youth services to ensure our activities are youth-led, inclusive, respectful, high-quality, empowering, and provide positive opportunities.

Our sessions are free of charge and held in accessible community spaces that are engaging and fun. Our goal is to empower young people from all backgrounds to participate in activities that support their physical, mental, and social well-being, helping them lead active, healthy, and positive lifestyles.

Some of the sessions we run and support include:

  • Beverley Twilight, Friday evenings - East Riding Leisure Beverley 8 -9pm
  • Multi Sports and fitness Tuesdays at The Mill East Riding Leisure Beverley 6pm-7 pm (Multi-sports for 11-16 years) 7.30 - 8.30 pm (Learn to lift 16+)
  • Goole Twilight, Tuesday evenings 6.30 -7.30 pm at South Park and Kingsway Park alternatively
  • Bridlington, Friday evenings (coming soon)
  • Driffield (Active Fridays), Friday evenings – delivered by Driffield Youth Action
  • Hornsea, Friday evenings – Delivered by Hornsea Youth Action
  • I'm The Girl I Want To Be – A creative confidence building programme supporting teenage girls between 12-16 years. Sessions provide an opportunity for girls to get together, form great friendships, share opinions and talk about all the issues that affect and interest them, self-esteem, relationships, the way the media makes us feel, fashion, dreams for the future, feeling great about ourselves and lots more. Currently running in Goole at Revive church every Tuesday 6-7.30 pm
  • We support and deliver provision as part of the Clear – Hold – Build initiative in Bridlington South, bringing together local youth providers to work with us to identify, develop and deliver positive activities for the young people in the area.
Revive Church

These sessions are really good, they pull a different mix of young people from across the Goole community and have different youth groups attending.

Girls group

I now volunteer on a Tuesday at the Moorlands, go to the youth club on a Wednesday and continue to attend the girls group every Thursday. I’ve made friends and my confidence has grown. I now bike to the park and I’m planning on going back to the boxing club.
